In the basement of the Inn and Spa, Armand and Jean-Guy were consulting.
âForensics came to the same conclusion we did,â said Beauvoir. âThe murder weapon was a log, cut for firewood. Agents are looking for the weapon in the woods.â
âI just had a word with them. To be honest, I doubt theyâll find it. I think it was thrown onto the bonfire. Billy Williams had doused the flames to embers, but the young man who discovered the bodyââ
âJacques Brodeur,â said Beauvoir.
ââsaid when he threw the stick into the bonfire, there were flames. Now, the wind had picked up and itâs possible there were embers under the ash and they came back to life, but I think they were helped along.â
âBy the murder weapon,â said Beauvoir.
When Isabelle arrived back a few minutes later, she told them about the interview with Alphonse Tardif.
âIt all fits,â she said. âSo we can at least put that to bed.â
âYes,â said Gamache.
One less investigation, one less complication, was always good. Butâ
âIs something bothering you, Isabelle?â
âIt just seemed a bit too easy. Alphonse Tardif didnât have to say anything. He sure didnât have to confess. We have no proof. If heâd just sat quietly listening to his lawyer, weâd have had to let him go.â
âMaybe he wanted to confess,â said Beauvoir. âSome do.â
âMaybe.â
âBut?â said Beauvoir.
âI donât know. It just seemed too quick, too pat. And when I showed him the video, he got really angry, like it was all a surprise.â
âIt was. He wasnât there,â said Beauvoir.
âNo, he said he was angry at himself, but I think he was furious at his brother, for doing it. Thatâs what it seemed like to me.â
âWhatâre you thinking?â asked Gamache.
âNothing really. I suppose theyâre exactly what they seem. Two local guys who got caught up in something. Who didnât think it through.â
âDo you think they meant to kill her?â asked Beauvoir.
âWell, Iâve charged him with being an accessory to attempted murder, but Iâm not so sure. I wish we had a clearer video.â
âLetâs keep looking for one,â said Gamache. âIn the meantime, we have an actual murder. Letâs concentrate on that.â
âSo far weâve been assuming that Abigail Robinson was the intended victim last night,â said Jean-Guy. âBut I think we need to consider that maybe she wasnât.â
âBut whoâd want to kill Debbie Schneider?â
âMaybe they didnât. There is another possibility.â Beauvoir looked from one to the other. Waiting to see if they saw it. âChancellor Roberge. She holds a senior position at the University. Someone could have a grievance against her or the University. A professor or student, or a worker who was fired.â
âBut no one knew sheâd be at the party,â said Lacoste.
âExactly. This murder wasnât premeditated, we know that. So someone there sees the Chancellor and snaps.â
âYouâre saying this might have nothing to do with Professor Robinson and her studies.â
âIâm saying itâs possible,â said Jean-Guy. âBut thereâs another possibility. A fairly obvious one.â
Gamache nodded. Heâd thought of that too. It was the most obvious solution. âColette Roberge killed Debbie Schneider while on their walk.
